RUST IN THE POPES HAT

The metal structure that sits on top of the building is known as the Popes Hat. It is a separate structure that is anchored to the building by steel beams and to these are fastened pressed steel beams. These hold aluminium panels and the roof structure that gives the Popes Hat its unusual shape and texture.

There are many air vents into the structure as it houses 3 levels of machinery that operate the air conditioning, fire equipment, water heating equipment and air to the building. The high wind at this level blows rain water through the vents and this moisture has caused surface rust on the press steel beams throughout the Popes Hat.

Remedial work has commenced to repair this damage and prolong the life of the structure. The rust has been wired brushed, spot coated with rust inhibitor, undercoated, then a finishing coat applied. There will need to be periodic maintenance to ensure longevity of the structure, with the present work contributing to this.
